The goal of community is unity

A drum carries the community beat. Slaves used drums as a way to communicate and to celebrate. Drums now bring us together to share music and dancing. A ball in the hoop represents the importance of having a goal and going after it. Going to college with the help of your family is an important goal. Whatever the goal — it is important to have it! Sometimes when we see tagging, we make assumptions about show that person is that did the tagging– and “he is the same as you.” When you see your brother, you see yourself. It’s the criminal activity that makes it negative, not the person. And children having fund and enjoying their different cultures is a big part of bringing community together. Seeing that there are endless possibilities is the path of life. On that path, love is to listen. We wanted our board to show Superintendent Enfield of the Seattle District and Mayor Mike McGinn coming to our community to talk with us and listen about what kind of education we want in our community to help all of our students do well. In the background is a portrait of W.E.B. DuBois, the soul of the movement to advance the quality of Black life in this country.

As you look at our board, you will see feathers that represent Native American traditions and colors that represent all of the different kinds of people in our community. At the bottom, you can see we have turned a giant ME upside down ot become a giant WE.
